Second part
Arriving in America, without any knowledge of the language, I immediately understood that if I wanted to survive, I absolutely had to learn to dialogue with people.
It was a mere matter of necessity for me when I went to school I had a grade of unclassifiable in the subject of the English language.
I was in Florida, precisely, I started watching television, but it was very complicated, one day, where I worked, I met a boy who was studying at university, and he said to me: “Don’t despair, I’ll help you”
He invited me to his house, he took a very basic English book, and he said to me: “I’ll give you one lesson only, then you’ll have to do it alone”
At that moment I was very confused, wondering: “How can I learn another language with just one lesson?”
That said, the lesson started, and he asked me to read some basic conversation phrases, like, “How are you?” Where are you from? How old are you? Etc….
So far it was simple, but I still didn’t understand anything, at a certain point in the lesson we started talking about numbers, and he asked me: “How do you say, number 1?” I replied in Italian, and he told me: ” 1 is said in English, One ”.
After this he told me that the lesson was over, I didn’t understand, I was stunned, but he said to me: “Stop thinking in Italian, think in English, number 1 in English, it’s One, this is important”
I had understood, and so I started watching television again, but this time associating the words with the gestures made by the actors, this allowed me to learn the English language in about three months.
I lost any kind of contact with this person, but if I could, I would thank him very much for all he did for me, he saved my life.
Thanks to the ability to dialogue properly, I met many people, and I finally started having a social life.
Among these people I met a boy who came from South Africa, it didn’t take long to get in tune with us, and after a year of staying in the USA, we decided to go to Cape Town, in his country ……
